Thinking of days to come...

I'm sitting here in a New Jersey hotel (visiting friends) thinking of life and my future trips to come. I'm excited for 2013 and what it has to bring me. This year will be a year of huge change considering I will be moving to Scotland this September. I'm thinking of what life means to people and I think its different for everyone. The meaning of life is subjective and changes depending on the person you are. My life means adventure and family. Sometimes you will have to sacrifice one for the other. When I travel to Scotland I will have to leave my family here in the states. I understand that and this is something I can handle for the sake of adventure and growing up. I won't be abandoning my family but loving them from a different country. I don't anticipate this to be a permanent move but who knows what fate will throw at me. I'm not saying that it will be easy. I am expecting this to be very hard but sometimes to find yourself in life you have to do things that make you uncomfortable.

My word for 2013 is

DISCOVER.

The word discover  goes back to Latin dis- and cooperire, meaning 'to remove the covering;completely uncover. So my plan is to remove the covering of new places and new things about me.

Trips planned in 2013:
March- Saint Patricks day in Boston
June- possible vacation to Caribbean with friends
July- Scotland with friends (native Scots) for two weeks
September- Scotland to live

Changes to myself in 2013:
new way of eating as I transition to vegan
new way of living in a balanced way where I am organized, not procrastinating, have time to exercise, and have time to read

Song of 2013 is a song I like to choose that anytime I think of 2013 I will think of this song.

this year's song is:
Old Pine by Ben Howard

favorite lyrics from this song is from the chorus:
We stood as steady as the stars in the woods, so happy hearted, and the warmth rang true inside these bones. As the old pine fell we sang just to bless the morning.

Omnivore vs. Herbivore

So I used to be a big advocate of the Paleo way of living which is a way of eating like the caveman- fresh veggies, lean meats, and nuts/berries. But lately I have been doing some research into human physiology and have made a big decision.

HUMANS ARE NOT MADE TO BE MEAT EATERS

take this for instance: the human intestines is about 26 feet long. a carnivore's intestines is much smaller, only 3-5 times its trunk, This is a tool designed for rapid elimination of food that rots quickly. take a look at these diagrams

see how twisted and long the deer's intestines is compared to the fox

here is our intestines, more like the herbivore than the carnivore wouldn't you think.

Now lets look at teeth

I think we would have a hard time bitting through fur and flesh ( but we would have to cook it first) with our teeth but the tiger looks like he can handle it pretty easily.

And maybe the most important factor to me, being a wildlife biology person, is that look at what chimps eat in the wild. Our DNA is 99.9% similar to those of the chimps so looking at them would be looking at a glimpse of how we should be in the wild.

Chimps have a diet consisting of mostly plants with insects and meant only making 1.4% of their diet. When chimps get meat is it only because the male has hunted and it is mostly a social occasion for the females to come and beg him for meat which he will give to them for a small price of 1 roll in the hay. Then they usually chew it up and get the juices and don't even eat most of the flesh.

Another factor: we are not instinctively hunters. The test for this is to give an child a bunny. If the infant plays with the bunny they were not born to hunt.
Human child would play- wolf child would eat. :-)

So my plan is to wean myself off of meat for the rest of December and be vegetarian if not vegan for the new year.

My plan:
week 1: eat meat once a day
week 2: eat meat once every other day
week 3: only eat meat once that week (which i will be saving for Christmas)

3 Strand Fishtail braided crown

So the title may seem complicated but to recreate this look simply follow these steps:

1. bring all hair to one side

2. create three different fishtail braids
-one at the ear level and two below

3. take the braid and pull little pieces out to create more volume

4. connect all three braids and the ends

5. pull the bottom to the other side with the braid at the crown and pin to secure

note: there is no way I could have long/thick enough hair for this on my own so I am wearing my luxy hair extensions 160 g set in mocha brown get your own here

DIY Christmas Wreath

Here is a little recipe for a homemade Christmas wreath using ingredients that you can just go outside and pick up. Here is what you'll need:
Collections from the outside like pinecones, stick berries, and cuts from an evergreen
Raffia
Initial of your family painted the desired color (optional)
Stick Wreath: I bought mine but you could totally make your own using the tutorial here
Stick Wires

First attach cuts from your evergreen to your stick wreath using the stick wire

Add some wraps of raffia for looks and also to hold your berries.

Slide your berries into the raffia and here I also attached a pinecone using stick wires

Here is the finished product. I have a double front door so I am making another with an initial

Just take your painted initial and wire it on with stick wire and hang on front door

Beware of the mess this may create with berries falling off and scraps from the stick wreath shedding
